Melinda McDonald presented project findings at the DEMC23 conference, Australia and New Zealand’s leading disaster and emergency management conference. Min talked about how when we begin to recognise our culturally diverse communities as trusted partners, who bring previously untapped knowledge and resilience to this dialogue – we can begin to bridge the gap between tokenism and authentic engagement, the gap between the values, practices and norms of diverse community members, and the necessary messaging of government agencies. And perhaps…the gap between preventable fire fatalities and a safer future for all Australians.
